Considering getting a Microdermabrasion?

If you are relatively new to skin care or receiving skin care treatments, it is important to know the benefits of exfoliation. So, why is exfoliating your skin so important? Our skin is in constant regeneration mode and naturally renews itself about every 28 days. In order to prevent skin from clogging or looking dull, we must help with this sloughing off process for a more fresh, dewy appearance. Exfoliation helps minimize the appearance of sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles and helps to clear up those stubborn whiteheads and blackheads. Exfoliation also helps with product penetration including serums and moisturizers. Whether you are in Colorado where product penetration is desperately needed to prevent dry and weathered skin or in Florida where humidity causes excessive clogged pores and debris on the skin, exfoliating is vastly important. Microdermabrasion is a great start to exfoliate your skin.

Most people have heard of Microdermabrasion, possibly seeing it on spa menu’s, but few know what it actually does. Microdermabrasion is a mechanical exfoliation treatment performed using either a crystal or diamond tip method. Crystal microdermabrasion is the release of aluminum oxide crystals that are then vacuumed up along with dead skin cells and debris as it passes along the skin. Protective eyewear is needed to prevent the crystals from getting into your eyes.  Diamond tip microdermabrasion uses a diamond tip wand that essentially does the same thing, without the messy crystal residue. With diamond tip, treatments are customized using tips that range from fine to course depending on the clients skin type. Also, goggles or eye pads are not necessary and your Esthetician can exfoliate your skin closer to the eyes helping with fine lines and wrinkles. Sometimes clients say they prefer crystal over diamond tip microdermabrasion because they feel more. The truth is they both do the exact same thing. Your Esthetician can adjust the depth of exfoliation with the strength of the vacuum and the coarseness of the diamond tip being used. Remember, your Esthetician is trained to asses how much your skin can handle so telling them to do more or turn the vacuum up doesn’t necessarily mean your skin will benefit from that. Too much exfoliating your skin can cause damage.

Contraindications for microdermabrasion include telangiectasia (tiny blood vessels usually found around the corners of the nose and upper cheeks) , rosacea, the use of Accutane, excessive Retin-A usage, keloid scarring, viral infections, bacterial infections and open lesions or rashes. If you have any of these contraindications or think you might have one, make sure to let your Esthetician know right away.
